“Hey, feel like doing a photoshoot?” I said.
“Sure,” My friend answered.
“Look!” *Shows picture* “Is it okay if I do this and put paint all over your face?” I said.
“Yeah, let’s do it!”
I am always full of ideas I want to try out. Often these ideas are quite extravagant and usually involve facepaint of some sort. Because I love photography, I decided that now that I have the time, I would like to improve my skills and my friend Daniel was up for it. So today I went over to his place and we started working.
At first he had to shave, because it is just easier to paint faces without hairs everywhere. After that I used bronzer to emphasise his cheek bones and to add some extra shadow here and there. With concealer I did some highlighting underneath his eyes, on his nosebridge, forehead and chin. After that I applied black eyeshadow on his eyelid because we saw a pic of David Bowie with black eyeshadow and we are total copycats, so there. It actually looked quite good on the photos. Initially we wanted to take some ‘normal’ photos which I made black and white because I thought it made them more powerful.
Because we did not have a studio or expensive lights and shit, Daniel had put up a black sheet and we had opened the curtains to use the daylight instead. It looked very cheap but it turned out to be incredibly effective.
We then decided to do the paint shoot. I had bought some cheap paint tubes and first put it all over his face. We took some test shots, but decided that it needed more. So Daniel took off his shirt, as you do, and we added some extra paint to make it even more spectacular. I am quite happy how the pictures turned out.
I am by no means a professional photographer, but I am very proud of these pictures. I felt like a 5-year old again while playing around with the paint. We also did quite a lot of dancing and singing throughout the shoot, so that was fun. I did not do much editing in Photoshop, because I thought the pictures looked very good already and over-editing would ruin them.
Anyway, I decided to make this a project. So in the coming weeks I will try to photograph more people covered in paint and I will naturally talk about it on this blog. We are also planning on doing a video-project so keep an eye out for that as well!
