All The Bright Places Film: Find Finch

So you probably heard about the brilliant Young Adult novel All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. Maybe you’ve even read it (if not, please do so). The book tells of two messed up teenagers: Theodore Finch is ‘the odd boy’, Violet Markey the former popular ‘fragile girl’. Both have pretty big mental issues. These two fractured teenagers gradually become friends and help each other with their problems. The novel is going to be a movie, with Elle Fanning starring as Violet. To find Finch though, is a completely different story…

Theodore Finch

Finch is a very complex character, certainly for YA standards. Let’s take a look at how I described him in my bookreview:

Finch is probably one of the best written characters ever in a YA novel. Half of the book is written from his point of view. We meet him on day six of ‘being awake’ as he calls it. It’s clear from the very start Finch has a troubled mind and a fascination for death/dying/suicide. Later on it becomes clear Finch suffers from manic depression. His life experience helps Violet cope with the recent tragic death of her older sister. I have no words for how amazing Theodore Finch is.

So it’s really important the perfect actor has to be found to portray this character. And let’s face it: there are probably dozens of great actors for this part. So how to find this needle in a haystack?

Find Finch hashtag

Luckily, amazing author Jennifer Niven is all on board to find her perfect Finch match. The last couple of weeks, (almost) each Monday she posted a #MovieMonday post on her Instagram to #FindFinch. She’s found a superb bunch of young actors who are all potential Finches. Fans are discussing these finds on social media. Just search for the hashtag on Twitter or Instagram! Her latest update on Instagram is a complete list of these actors, check it out below.

From Jennifer Niven’s Instagram:

On this #MovieMonday I present the recap of actors on the list to play Theodore Finch in the movie version of All the Bright Places! IT’S TIME TO VOTE, LOVELIES!!! 🎉🙊Feel free to comment and discuss here (I’ll be reading), but to make your vote official, click on the link in the bio. You can only vote once, so make sure you vote with your whole heart! 💛 I’ll keep the poll open until Saturday, and will reveal the results on Monday, one week from today. While this vote won’t be the deciding factor as to who plays Finch, it will definitely be part of the casting process. Your opinion is SO IMPORTANT to us and especially to me. 😊

I know we all see Finch in slightly different ways, and the perfect actor to some of us may not be the one you see for the role, but all of the actors here are talented. They’ve made the list because they have something in them that makes us think of Finch. 🐦🌸 In order of Movie Monday’s, they are: Cole Sprouse, Asa Butterfield, Darryl Dale, Miles Heizer, Timothee Chalamet, Freddie Highmore, Steffan Argus, Charlie Heaton, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Nick Robinson, and Jonah Hauer-King. Freddie and Cole are the oldest at 25 and 24, with Ferdia the youngest at 17. Jonah is (I believe) the tallest at 6’3″, but some of the others are over six foot as well. Jonah and Asa are the only ones with naturally black hair and blue eyes. Most, if not all, can sing. But the most important thing is that we choose an actor who can BECOME Finch to all of us. That is why it’s time to vote!!!! 🎬😂Thank you all for helping us! And thank you for all the love you give to Finch and me. You truly make us lovely. 😘❤️

Vote on Jennifer Niven’s Find Finch List

The complete Find Finch list consists of Cole Sprouse, Asa Butterfield, Darryl Dale, Miles Heizer, Timothee Chalamet, Freddie Highmore, Steffan Argus, Charlie Heaton, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Nick Robinson, and Jonah Hauer-King. There’s a poll to vote for your favorite Finch. It’s only open for a couple of days so be sure to cast your vote!

It’s so cool to see an author so involved with finding the perfect match for her character. Keep in mind this sentence from her Instagram: while this vote won’t be the deciding factor as to who plays Finch, it will definitely be part of the casting process. Take a look at Niven’s older #MovieMonday Instagram posts for more information on each young actor.

I wonder which of these actors will win the Find Finch poll. And I wonder even more who will end up portraying the amazing and unforgettable Theodore Finch. Who are you voting/rooting for?
