It happens once in a while. Usually a popular book gets published or a show airs, featuring a mythical creature everybody goes crazy about. In 2005, the novel Twilight was released and sparked a worldwide vampire frenzy. More recently, The Walking Dead made everybody go crazy about zombies. But as with all trends, they come and go. But what is the new trend? Well, we’ve been keeping an eye on what is hot nowadays and here’s our prediction: Faeries are all the rage.
From Witchcraft to Sparkly Vampires
In the late 90s, a then unknown writer by the name of J.K. Rowling released a children’s book called Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Nobody had expected it to become as massive as it did. The result was that even more writers tried to cash in on the newfound love of wizards and witches. It makes sense. If something makes money, others try to get in on the trend.
While the Pottercraze never ended, the obsession with magic and wizards did. In the late 2000s, teenagers and housewives alike all fell in love with the sparkly vampire Edward Cullen. While many ridiculed the Twilight saga, it was still popular enough to be the start of a brand new vampire craze. I recall leaving the cinema and a girl told her friends: “I really want a vampire boyfriend!”
Not everybody agreed with the way vampires were portrayed in the Twilight saga, but at the same time, series like True Blood and later The Vampire Diaries provided a more authentic take on the bloodsucker. In the meantime, the market was flooded with vampire fiction, because money was to be made!
From the undead to the dead
The vampire craze lasted a couple of years, before the zombies took over. The Walking Dead became immensely popular and many suddenly adored the brain-eaters. It was unexpected because for many years, supernatural romance appeared to be the main theme. And let’s be honest, zombies are not that attractive.
But the zombie outbreak is dying down and a new trend is on the rise. Before we take a look at that, let’s see what actually makes something popular.
From zero to pop culture hero
What makes a book or a movie a success? Sometimes a movie or book is slated for success, but it fails. And the opposite is true as well. Some books or movies become unexpected successes, against all odds. So how come a story about vampires is popular at a certain time, but when other stories about the same topic follow, they fail.
Success has a variety of factors. Naturally luck is a large part of it, but it can’t be seen as the sole factor to give credit to, One of the things that is very important is that it has to appeal to people’s emotions. The Twilight story resonated with many females (and some males) because of its romantic elements and the supernatural. Whether you like the saga yourself or not, is not relevant. If enough people feel something when reading a book or watching a movie, it has a shot at becoming popular and starting a trend. Same with Fifty Shades. While it is generally perceived as poorly written, it made enough people feel something, and so it becomes popular.
Generally we feel that when something receives enough advertising, it becomes popular. While, it helps, it certain is no guarantee for success. The thing that does however contribute to success is positive word-of-mouth advertising. If a friend you trust recommends something to you, you are more likely to check it out. If you then love it, you will tell more people and that is how trends are born. It is also why bloggers have become so influential over the years. They are not necessarily critics but they do give that friend-vibe. If a blogger I like dislikes something and gives me convincing arguments, I am less likely to check the book or movie for myself.
Will Faeries replace Zombies?
It always takes a while before a craze catches on. After all, before Harry Potter and Twilight became phenomena, the books had already been around before being turned into movies. Series like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead became popular after everybody told their friends and family about how great it was,
But now that we are done with all the bloodsuckers and brain-eaters, what will become popular next? We expect that Faeries will be all the rage very soon. There are quite a lot of books about Faeries, but with the immense success of The Court of Thorns and Roses series, and the inevitable movie version, we think many Faerie fiction will follow. While many will think about Tinkerbell when talking about the topic, the modern version of Faeries are insanely beautiful, with pointed ears and magical powers. At least they don’t sparkle!
