Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – The Original Screenplay

As you may have noticed, I’m quite obsessed with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I was heartbroken when my boyfriend told me he wanted to wait a week before seeing it (even though I have already seen it but once is not enough). Luckily the postman graced me with a visit and delivered the original screenplay, which I was very excited about. Now I’ve asked the book A Case full of Creatures for Christmas so if I do get that, I will of course show it to you. But today we will take a closer look at the screenplay to see if it’s worth buying. Accio book review!

The cover is¬†designed by MinaLima, who also did most of the designs for the Harry Potter films. Basically this equals a fantastic cover in 20s style, which suits the film. There are also quite some creatures hidden in the design, including a mysterious bird-like creature on the back. I guess it is the Swooping Evil, but I’m not quite sure. The book is a hardcover and the actual design is printed on a sleeve. Downside to this is that it can damage easily. But if you just put the book on display after reading it, it should be fine. It is a real eye-catcher, so it will look good on every book shelf.

Screenplay

It is not actually a story written like the Harry Potter books. It’s a screenplay, which you read differently from a regular book. Kind of like the Cursed Child, which is also a script. Some people find it more difficult to read but I think this screenplay is easier to read than Cursed Child; because there is a lot more description about what is happening, which the Cursed Child lacked. That makes sense, because the Cursed Child was written for the stage and Fantastic Beasts for the big screen, which is fundamentally different. Furthermore, it has to be noted that this is not the script used by the actors an the original one written by J.K. Rowling. The really original screenplay includes scenes that did not make it into the final cut. The book is basically a representation of the final cut and does not include those deleted scenes.

Throughout the book you can find some great drawings based on the Fantastic Beasts that we meet in the film. They are not on every page, which makes it even more special when you turn the page to find a new drawing greeting you. It makes reading the screenplay more fun as well.

Whether you want to read the screenplay before the film so you know what it’s about, or whether you want to read it afterwards to relive the magic, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them The Original Screenplay, is a must-have for every fan of the Wizarding World. It’s especially great if you love books and love collecting everything Harry Potter related.
