Now this is an interesting subject for a top 10 from That Artsy Reader Girl. When I think of actual libraries or bookstores around the world, there aren’t many I’d really like to visit. However, when I think of fictional bookshops or libraries, I can name many!
1. The library from Beauty and the Beast
Which female book nerd didn’t envy Belle when the Beast gifted her an entire library with all these books for her to read. I know I thought that was the ultimatum of romance seeing a gesture like that. I have dropped the hint with my boyfriend that that would be my ultimate wish, but I don’t think he is willing to build me a palace with a library.
2. The cavernous library of the Night Court from A Court of Thorns and Roses
This library doesn’t just contain books, I actually found it quite creepy that the deeper you go, you got the sense that there was something else there with you. When you later find out its actually a monster being imprisoned that could easily kill some might foes, it becomes even creepier.
3. Library in Hogwarts (Harry Potter)
A library filled with magical spell books, information about all magical creatures in the world, and a forbidden section? I think any of us who loved the Harry Potter books, would love to have a snoop in the library of Hogwarts and just read to our hearts contents.
4. Planet sized library from Doctor Who
Can you imagine going to a library the size of a planet and containing every book ever written? This library was commissioned by Felman Lux for his dying daughter Charlotte, who loved books more than anything. Her mind was put into the library’s hard drive so she was able to read forever. It was also where we first met River Song.
5. Flourish and Blotts in Diagon Alley
Hogwarts is where we go to borrow books, but for those of us who want to buy them all, then Diagon Alley is where we should head. If I had all the money in the world, I’d probably spend it all in Flourish and Blotts to get all the books for my own collection.
6. Sunnydale High School Library from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
It was the base for the Scooby-gang and they did a lot of research to demons and other monsters in this place. I always wanted to see what the ‘secret’ library books looked like and what was written in them. Also having Rupert Giles for a librarian is a big plus.
7. Unseen University Library from Discworld
This is like another Hogwarts library, shelves upon shelves with books about magic. And if it can’t get any better, the Librarian is an orangutan who enforces 3 rules: silence, books must be returned no later than the last date shown and Do not meddle with the nature of casualty.
8. The Monastery Library from The Name of the Rose
I remember watching this movie during my History Class. I found it intriguing that there would be hidden and forbidden books that could kill people in a monastery. The fact that this library is almost like a maze, made it even scarier and darker.
9. The Jedi Temple Library
We haven’t seen much of it in any of the Star Wars movies, but it is actually mentioned in several spin-off novels. Going from old novels in most of these examples to a high tech bastion of all things Jedi knowledge sounds really cool to me. Would we still be reading books like we do now or is it more like grabbing a kindle or tablet, which represents one book?
10. Lucien’s Library in Sandman
In the middle of The Dreaming, in a place called Dream’s Castle, is Lucien’s library. It contains every book that anyone has ever dreamed of writing but has never written. You can read anything, even if it’s written in a language you can’t understand. But if those dreamers turn into writers, the book in the library will burst into flames.
