Even though this year we have to do without a new Game of Thrones season, nothing can stop us at the Sassologist writing about one of our favorite settings. The world of Westeros is filled with magic, mystery and intriguing people. Honestly, we can’t get enough of it. So that’s why it’s great that there are a lot of things coming for us fans. Take a look at what we can expect in the not too distant future.
Game of Thrones Season 8
2018 is a tough year for us Game of Thrones fans. This is the first year ever (since the start of the show, obviously) without a new season. We have to wait for over a friggin year to see what happens in Westeros. Will Jon and Dany stay together once they realize they’re aunt and nephew? Will Cersei die in the final season? And will it be Jaime who kills her? What about Tyrion? And Sansa? And argh! Soon many open endings, so many questions!
We still have to wait for an official release date, but chances are, the show is back in the spring of 2019. Probably in April or May. While waiting for season 8, we have some tips for you. Also, this is the time for fan theories. There are so many already! And with more and more details about the new season coming our way, more theories can be expected as well. We might write a piece about our theories somewhere between now and the start of season 8. The final season EVER.
An untitled prequel series
Luckily, fans won’t have to do without Westeros for too long. HBO themselves have confirmed there’s gonna be a sequel TV-series. It’s not unexpected. Talks of this, or a sequel/spin-off series have been around for ages. And besides Westworld, HBO doesn’t have a lot of cash-cows at the moment. So it makes complete sense a new tv-series is developed. There are actually no less than FIVE prequels in the works. Of those, HBO ordered a pilot episode of one of them. Not much is known yet, but we can expect this:
- Jane Goldman is writing this, together with George R.R. Martin himself. Goldman is known for her work on Stardust, Kickass and the Kingsman films.
- It’s set thousands of years before Game of Thrones
- It’ll start with the Age of Heroes
- The true origin of the White Walkers will be featured
- Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are not involved
Since this new, untitled, series is written by a woman, there’s already speculation the lead will be a woman. But if yet go Game of Thrones-style, there’s probably going to be an amazing and talented ensemble cast. We’ll keep you posted if there’s any news on this new series!
Winds of Winter
Fans have been waiting for this book ever since 2011. Publication dates of 2015 and on have been guessed, but as for now, the only thing known for certain is that Winds of Winter will NOT be out in 2018. Hopefully, it’s gonna be 2019 because we need that book. Sadly, the tv-series will be finished by then. So, most of the fans will already know how the books will end. It’s not often that a tv-series/film is produced quicker than the actual source material.
A Dream of Spring
A Dream of Spring is the sequel to Winds of Winter and also the last book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Since Winds of Winter doesn’t have a publication date (or year) yet, who knows when A Dream of Spring will be released? If it takes George R.R. Martin as long as Wow, chances are we can read it around 2028-2029. My God, let’s hope it’s gonna be sooner than that… This is what Martin had to say about the end of his series:
I’m not going to tell you how I’m going to end my book, but I suspect the overall flavor is going to be as much bittersweet as it is happy.

Fire and Blood
Before Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, another book by George R.R. Martin will hit the shelves. Fire and Blood is not a A Song of Ice and Fire book, but it is set in Westeros. Fire and Blood tells the complete history of the house Targaryen. Now, since there were some nut jobs in that family, this book will probably kick ass. Still, I’m sad Martin decided to give this book more attention than Winds of Winter. But as I love the bits of Targaryen history throughout the ASOIAF books, I will probably read this.
Other than WoW and ADoS, Fire and Blood actually has a release date: November 20th, 2018. Yup, that’s THIS YEAR! I reckon Santa will give away a looooot of books this year. It’s a pretty smart release date, marketing-wise. I wonder what the reviews are going to be like. If they are great, it’s going on my list. If they aren’t… I’ll wait until the paperback. Want to know more? Here’s the Goodreads page for Fire and Blood.
And probably a lot more Westeros things
It’s a cash-cow. Its very popular. So it makes sense more things will be coming our way. For now, George R.R. Martin is busy finishing his epic series so we have those books to look forward to. Who knows what else he’ll write after that? Knowing Martin, it’s a good bet new books will be set somewhere/some time in Westeros. And since there are four more tv-series in the works besides the one already ordered by HBO, we can expect a whole lot of new shows as well. So, what are you looking forward to the most? For me, it’s a tie between Winds of Winter and Game of Thrones season 8.
