A few years ago, I had zero notion of what a comic con was. I had heard about them, but I had also heard many prejudices. Comic cons were for nerds. If you wanted to be cool, you should never go to one. I did not have the chance to attend one until a few years ago Dutch Comic Con was organised. The first year I didn’t go, but after that I visited every year. And yes, while everybody who attended was a geek in some way, that wasn’t a bad thing. In fact, the whole con wasn’t as bad as these people made it seem. Every year I attend Dutch Comic Con now and every year it makes me happier. I thought about the reasons why it made me feel that way and decided to write them all down.
A few months ago, it was announced that the travelling exhibition of Harry Potter would finally come to the Netherlands. For the past few years, the expo has travelled around the world, making sure fans could catch a glimpse of the amazing masterpieces made for the Potter Franchise. I was allowed to visit the press opening, which was yesterday. The Harry Potter expo Utrecht will officially open tomorrow, but you can already take a sneak peek in this post.
Last weekend, the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht was once again transformed into a place where Pop Culture lovers from all genders and ages came together to celebrate their fandoms in true Christmas style. It was the Christmas themed Dutch Comic Con: Dutch X-Mas Con. This year the organisation managed to get some great guests to attend; most notably Jason Isaacs who portrayed Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series.
The first thing I noticed when we arrived at the convention was that it was considerably smaller than the edition held in March. This wasn’t surprising considering the fact that another Fantasy convention was held that very same weekend. I assume many people who prefer fantasy chose to attend that convention instead. That did not spoil the fun for us. Upon entering the hall, we walked right into Whoville, the fictional village that appeared in the film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It was very well done and it immediately got us into Christmas spirits!
