The man behind Battlepug
Battlepug is the brainchild of Mike Norton, a renowned comic book artist. Initially, he created the characters for a T-shirt. Afterwards, it became a webcomic and Dark Horse eventually printed hardcover editions of this comic.
Revenge on the seal! ..wait, what?
Now that you’ve read some background and I have your interest, what the hell is Battlepug about?
It’s a dark humoured fantasy in the vein of Conan the Barbarian. The nameless main character is the last remaining member of his tribe after a giant baby seal killed them all. This is orchestrated by a mysterious man riding a tiger. Basically, the goal of our hero is to get revenge on the seal and find the mysterious man. A weird Santa lookalike, whose army consists of elves, kidnaps him. After his escape, he finds a sidekick in a crazy old man and the best steed ever; the Battlepug. What ensues is a funny, violent and gorgeously drawn quest of a man, his sidekick and his steed.
The narrator of the story is Moll. She tells the story to two cute talking dogs, including a Pug and a French Bulldog. As they hear the story, you are taken along for the ride.
One of the strong sides of this comic is for example the artwork. Mike Norton has created a weird and wonderful world. And hopefully the Battlepug will charm you as much as he or she has charmed me. In fact, I love pugs in general and hope to own one in the near future. And when I found out about a comic named Battlepug, I had to check it out and I’m glad I did. Rest assured, the series isn’t specifically for Pugaffecionados. It’s a great fantasy book.
Furthermore, one of the best parts is, you can read it for free on battlepug.com. For that reason, you don’t have to spend money to see if you like it. Onwards!
