Coming Soon to TV and Comics: Runaways

There’s a lot of cool stuff coming this fall/winter for us popculture nerds. Maybe we’ll be the cool people we are and write blogs about all awesome things coming your way. But for now, here’s my piece about just one of these jewels: Marvel’s Runaways. This isn’t just a new television show, it’s also a reboot of a comic series that ran from 2003 to 2009.  The setting of both: a group of teenagers from different backgrounds unite against their parents, who turn out to be evil supervillains.

Runaways: Comics

The best news first: Rainbow Rowell is writing the new series. She’s one of my favourite authors so I’m pretty stoked about that fact. She’s part of the creative team together with comic artist Kris Anka. You might know Rowell as author of books like Fangirl, Carry On and Eleanor & Park. And you might know Kris Anka from the amazing art he makes, duh. They are both great people to follow on social media by the way.

But back to Runaways. The comic series was created in 2003 by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. Vaugh is also known for his work on other cool comics like Saga and Paper Girls. The original cast consists of six teenagers who all have parents who are part of ‘The Pride’, a team of supervillains. What would you do if you found out something like that? Well, the title of the comics gives it away: the teens run away and try to learn more about their parentage and backgrounds. The series ran from 2003 – 2004 and from 2005 – 2009. And now, there’s a new reboot in town.

Rowell will reunite most of the original cast. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she said the following:

At the beginning of this series they are scattered to the four winds and half of them are dead. One of the challenges now is who are they when they’re apart? They got thrown together, but now they’ve been pulled apart. They’re trying to figure out who they really are without each other… This arc is very much about them choosing to be together.

And look at the gorgeous artwork that already is out there. There’s so much to be excited about!

The new Runaways comics will debut in September

Runaways: TV-series

Marvel's Runaways tv series cast

Obviously, the plot for the Runaways television series is the same as the comics. Six teenagers fight their evil parents in The Pride. There was talk of a film back in 2008 but due to the succes of the Avengers, that project was shelved. Now, there’s going to be a television series and that’s a pretty smart move. Marvel series tend to be of high quality (Luke Cage or Legion are great examples) of just very fun to watch (Agents of SHIELD). Runaways will air on Hulu with a run of 10 episodes for season 1.

Not much is known yet, there are hardly any (set)photo’s or a (teaser)trailer so this is a wait and see. Series co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage know a thing or two about teenage television though, as they were both part of creative teams for The O.C. and Gossip Girl. The main cast consists of relatively unknown actors except for James Marsters, who plays one of the evil parents.

So for now, it’s time to wait for the first images and reviews. Let’s hope it does get better press than that other Marvel television show coming soon, Inhumans. That show is getting a lot of negative press at the moment. What are you most excited about, the Runaways comic reboot or the Runaways tv-series?

The Runaways tv-series will air in November

Nora would like more time in a day to watch more tv-series & films, write more stories and read more books. Instead, she tries to combine working fulltime and being a wife, mom & friend with sponging up as much popculture in her life as one possibly can. Trigger words for her include, but are not limited to: Gaiman, Rowling, Riordan, Rowell, Star Wars, Marvel, Batman, Bucky, Netflix & Disney. On all Social Media she's known as nosinne.
