It’s almost time for Christmas. And most of us will be spending time with our loved ones. As fun as it is to talk to family and friends, sometimes you need a little escape from social obligations and watch a movie. Usually Christmas movies can be on the feel good side of the spectrum, but sometimes you want something more. Well here are 5 Alternative Christmas movies that may not seem like Christmas movies but are actually the best Holiday movies ever!
One of the best actions movies of the 80’s, and it’s a Christmas movie. On Christmas even NYPD John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, tries to reconcile with his estranged wife Holly at a Christmas party of her employer. A group of terrorists takes over the party, while John McClane slips away. Heart pounding action as McClane tries to stop the terrorists, while being cut of from the outside world. The main terrorist Hans Gruber is played by the late Alan Rickman and he is the cherry on top. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a must watch and if you have seen it: watch it again!
One of the movies that gave me nightmares when I was about five or six. Now it’s one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. A struggling inventor tries to find a late Christmas present for his son Billy. At a Chinese antique store he finds a curious furry creature called a Mogwai. The owner refuses to sell; however, his grandson does sell the Mogwai but under the condition that he follows three strict rules. The rules are: no sunlight or bright lights, no feeding after midnight and to never let it get wet. After getting the Mogwai Gizmo wet, he reproduces and more Mogwai are created. After feeding them after midnight, they cocoon and turn into Gremlins. Now the town is under attack of these evil creatures. Funny and dark horror comedy. Must watch!
The second Tim Burton Batman movie is set during Christmas! An all star cast with Micheal Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito and Christopher Walken. Oswald Cobblepot was thrown away as a child because he was deformed. Raised by penguins, 33 years later he tries to run for Mayor with the help of evil businessman Max Schreck. Batman tries to stop them, together with the mysterious Catwoman. Stunning dark visuals as we come to know from Tim Burton. The plot is convoluted, but Danny DeVito as The Penguin is magnificent. Any reason to watch a Batman movie is a good one!
I already wrote a review about this movie during my Horrortober month. But it’s a great alternative movie for this season. After Max loses his faith in Santa, because of his nasty extended family, a blizzard hits his town. Mysterious murders happend, toys come to life and become evil and the center of it all is the evil Krampus. Highly entertaining horror comedy!
To finish off my list: the classic Charles Dickens tale, with a twist. A cynical TV producer tasked with a live production of A Christmas Carol, is put under stress by the network. Hours before the start of this production, he is visited by the ghost of his mentor. His mentor warns him that he will be visited by three ghosts that night. Well, we all know what happens in the story. Besides being a great adaptaton of the classic story, the reason to watch this movies is Bill Murray! He plays the TV producer and as always makes the movie so much better.
These are my five suggestions for alternative Christmas movies. I hope you like them. If you have suggestions of your own, please leave them in your comments. Happy holidays and all the best!
