American Gods Season 2 Has Some Troubles...

American Gods Season 2 Has Some Troubles…

It was everybody’s favorite new television show of 2017: American Gods. It got high praise from critics and viewers alike. It’s different from other shows on television. Colourful, intriguing, new, sexy, harsh and a sight for sore eyes. The show has a 92% critics score at Rotten Tomatoes, and an 83% audience score. So, it’s logical that everybody is psyched for American Gods season 2. But… there are glitches. Maybe Technical Boy and Media had something to to with it, but either way, things aren’t looking bright for the second season.

The Showrunners left

For those who don’t know what a showrunner does: it’s basically the boss of that particular show. The mastermind behind the scenes. The showrunner has creative crontrol of the series. For American Gods, there were two showrunners for the first season: Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. Fuller is a well known name in television. He was the man behind shows like Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me and Hannibal. Green was a writer before becoming showrunner, for things like Smallville, Heroes and hitfilms such as Logan, Alien: Covenant, Blade Runner 2049 and Murder on the Orient Express. Fuller and Green were the creative geniuses behind the Neil Gaiman adaptation.

But, at the end of november, it became clear that both men were not coming back for American Gods season 2. They reportedly clashed with producer FremantleMedia over creative direction and budget. Rumors go that one episode of the series costs somewhere around 10 million dollars, and Fuller and Green wanted/needed more money. Not a lot is known about their departure, but fact is that they left and are not coming back.

Gillian Anderson won’t return as Media

American Gods Season 2 Easter Media Gillian Anderson Kristen Chenowth

Easter (Kristen Chenoweth) and Media (Gillian Anderson) face off in season 1

Just this week, news reached us that Gillian Anderson also wont be back for American Gods season 2. Anderson played the pivotal role of Media. In the first season, she was on screen as legends like Lucille Ball and David Bowie. Her reason for not returning is the departure of Fuller and Green. This is very sad, as Anderson was brilliant as the modern Goddess. As Media is an important role, it will have to be re-cast. Those are some big shoes to fill for the next actress coming along.

And to top this nasty news off: it’s also still unclear if Kristen Chenoweth will return as the Goddess Easter. Now, Easter plays a far smaller part in the original novel, so this is of less consequence. But still, Chenoweth is amazing and it would be such a shame to lose both her and Anderson. Nothing more is known about the actors. Only Anderson announced her departure in clear terms. So let’s hope all other stars will stick around for the second season. If we lose more names, the future will be even more unclear… So while Media and Easter sadly must be re-cast, hopefully Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), Emily Browning (Laura Moon), Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Bruce Langley (Technical Boy) and Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday) will stay. The show won’t be the same without them!

Neil Gaiman says S2 will still happen

And if we can’t trust Mr. Gaiman, who can we still trust? There’s no elaborate response from Gaiman on the showrunners leaving, and he has yet to comment on the departure of Gillian Anderson. But in two tweets, Gaiman made clear what will happen, according to him:

On if Neil Gaiman is the next showrunner for American Gods:

On if season 2 is still happening:

So, here’s to hoping that American Gods season 2 will still happen, with as much of the original cast as possible. It’ll be tough without Fuller and Green, but not impossible. I’m certainly keeping my fingers crossed as this was one of my 2017 favorites.
