Last week news broke that Johnny Depp was cast as Grindelwald in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts films. A lot of people were enthusiastic about Depp’s casting. But, there were also many people who said that they were shocked. They were not sure whether they wanted to see the film now. All of this is of course because of the allegations that Depp abused his ex-wife Amber Heard. I personally am still very excited for the film. I’m not bothered by the fact that Johnny Depp has been cast, a case which some may argue. But in this post I would like to explain why we shouldn’t condemn a whole film based on the casting of one person.
First of all, the abuse allegations. I am not going to say that Amber lied. I am not going to say that she made it all up for money or to ruin Johnny’s career. If it all did happen, it’s terrible. No woman should have to endure abuse in any way from their spouse. But I feel like we are getting too caught up in the lives of celebrities and feel like we need to pick sides and act like we’re in any way involved. But we’re not. We are not part of their private lives. We weren’t there when whatever happened happened. And so we are not aware of the full story and because of that, I am not willing to say I will boycot every film Johnny is in just because of my principles.
I think it is great that so many women and men out there are fighting for the rights of women, and I am one of them. But I think we should be careful about starting witch hunts. Every story has two sides. I feel like I don’t have to be a fan or like Johnny Depp as a person to like the work he does as an actor. And to be honest, I think he will do just fine. I see no need why we should play the judge and convict him of a crime when the case was settled and everybody moved on with their lives. And how can anyone better their life if they are constantly being condemned by people who don’t even know the full story? Since when do we use the guilty until proven innocent card?
Overacting or excellent actor?
The other argument against his involvement has nothing to do with his private life. It’s more about the fact that people claim he always overacts. Now if you watch the blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland, then yes, I get that you think he is overacting in all of his films. But regardless of whatever is going on in his personal life, Depp is actually an excellent actor who can do serious roles without overacting. Take a look at the following clips from the films Black Mass and Public Enemies. Watch them and tell me that he would not be capable of playing an evil character.
I’m positive Johnny Depp will be a great addition to the Wizarding World. I’m excited to see how he will bring the character of Grindelwald to life.
