We’re crying. You’re crying. All the fans are crying. The rumors were there for some time, but now HBO has officialy confirmed: there will be no Game of Thrones this year. The eight and, sigh, final season will air in 2019. So this is the first year since 2011 without any new episodes. Without Jon Targaryen banging his aunt. Without Tyrion scheming and drinking. There’s no Head Bitch Cersei in 2018. No kickass Stark girls. And OK, we can do a year without Bran. But what to do now? We’ve got some tips for you to get through this tough year.
Rewatch all seven GoT seasons
This one’s easy. As there’s no new content coming this year, you might as well rewatch everything. Think about how cute the baby Starks were! And all the Kings still lived: Robert, Renly, Stannis, Robb, and even Joffrey and Tommen. Gods, a lot of kings died in this show. You’ll get to see Hodor hold the door again, have Melisandre bring back Jon, after watching him die. It’s a great way to refresh your memory this year, as all details will surely ebb away long before 2019.
Take you time with this. As there are seven seasons ready to watch, see one each month. If you start somewhere in the summer, you’ll be ready by the time the new season will (hopefully) start. There’s no need to bingewatch this, you can go as slow as you like. And be sure to watch all of the extra’s on the DVD/Blu-Ray for some fun background information.
Read the books
In case you forgot, the serie is based on the books by George R.R. Martin. There are currently five books out in the epic A Song of Ice and Fire series. Each one is massive, so this can take up plenty of time in 2018, with no new Game of Thrones episodes coming your way. And as adaptations go, there is way more information in the books than in the TV-series. There are also a lot more characters. And just wait until you read what happens to Sansa: it’s completely different than on television! So you’ll still be surprised at times.
And when you’ve finished reading the books, you can join all other bookfans like me in waiting for the last two installments of the series: The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. No joke: we’ve been waiting for Winds of Winter since 2011. Anyway, start with A Game of Thrones, the first book. After that go and read A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. You’ll notice that the show has catched up with the series and is actually ahead now.
Enjoy yourself with our GoT content
Over the years, we’ve written plenty about Game of Thrones. That’s why were helping you through 2018: we need to get through it as well. We hate that there’s no new Game of Thrones season this year. Here’s the list of articles about GoT:

Watch something else
With no Game of Thrones in 2018, there’s now time to watch something else. Maybe even something new. You can check out these 10 new television series starting in 2018. There’s probably something of your liking on that list. Or, if you want to stick with HBO, go and see the first season of Westworld. It’s a completely different setting than Game of Thrones, but it’s a very cool and intriguing show. If westerns aren’t for you and you want to watch something based on a fantasybook, I can highly recommend American Gods. It’s based on the novel by Neil Gaiman.
If you’re looking for a show with lots of seasons/episodes to get you through the year, try Agents of SHIELD, Supernatural, The Walking Dead or Once Upon A Time. Other great shows you can pick up are Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, all Netflix Marvel series (except Iron Fist) and Legion. And if you’re desperate for a laugh now that there’s no Game of Thrones coming your way, go and see Modern Family or The Good Place.
No Game of Thrones? No problem!
See, it’s not as bad as it seems. There’s plenty to do while waiting for 2019 to come around. And since HBO wants you to remember GoT, there probably will be lots of new cool photo’s from season 8, and maybe even a (teaser) trailer. You could always go to a convention and cosplay as your favorite GoT character, or go and see if any of the actors will attend a Comic Con! It’s sad that there’s no Game of Thrones waiting for us this year, but there are so many other cool things to watch and read. Before you know it, it’ll be 2019 and we’ll have another reason to be sad: Game of Thrones season 8 is the LAST EVER. So let’s not think about that tragic fact just yet and entertain ourselves this year.
