This week has been a good week for trailers. We got the Crimes Of Grindelwald trailer and now we can also add X-Men: Dark Phoenix to that list. The X-Men franchise doesn’t have a track record for delivering good films. In fact, most of them have been very disappointing. However, with Dark Phoenix, it seems like the X-Men are taking a very different direction, more in line with the comics. So here’s everything you should know about Dark Phoenix.
If you haven’t already, check out the trailer first:
Who is the Dark Phoenix?
Jean Grey, one of the most famous X-Men, is the host of the Phoenix force. She acquired the force when the X-Men returned from a mission to space and things went wrong. In order to save her teammates, she sacrificed her life to pilot the spaceship safely back to Earth. This did mean that she was going to be exposed to high levels of radiation, which in turn should have resulted in her death. This did not happen. Jean survived and had acquired new cosmic powers that complimented her already stellar telepathic gifts, rendering her almost invincible. That said, at some point, the Phoenix Force completely takes over Jean’s mind and wreaks havoc upon the world.
This will not be the first time that the Phoenix Force has manifested itself in an X-Men film. In The Last Stand, the Phoenix Force has also taken hold of Jean and she is out there destroying the world. However, in that film the cosmic link is not explained. Judging from the moment on the spaceship in the trailer, Dark Phoenix will talk about that moment.
The world is on fire
It’s a teaser trailer, so obviously we don’t know much about the film and what it will entail yet. The official synopsis is as follows:
In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
What we do know from the trailer is that Jean Grey is pissed off and Charles Xavier is most likely to blame. While reactions from fans were mixed, we think it is too early to judge just yet. Maybe it will be very good. Or perhaps it is time for the MCU to re-do the X-Men and give them a fair shot. What do you think?
Dark Phoenix is set to be released in June, 2019 (pushed back again from February 14th…).
