What to be excited about in 2017: Films

A new year is upon us! And while we say goodbye to 2016 without shedding a tear, it is time to look ahead at what’s coming in 2017. In this post we will be looking at films that will be released in the first half of 2017 and we will also take a look at why they are so exciting to look forward to. Hi 2017 films!

Films in January 2017

A Dog’s Purpose

This is a film about dogs. I repeat, this is a film about dogs. There will be puppies and big dogs and cuddling and probably tears because it is a film about canines and that equals sadness. Happiness too. Nobody can look at a dog film and not be happy. It will probably make me leave the cinema crying my eyeballs out and making me want to hug my puppies even when they just ruined the couch. God, I am already emotional just thinking about this film. Someone pass me the tissues.

Other noteworthy releases in January: Patriots Day, Resident Evil; The Final Chapter, xXx 3

Films in February 2017

The Lego Batman Movie

Seriously, if you haven’t seen the Lego Movie, then you have missed out on a very important part of your life and you should definitely go and watch it right this instant. Yes, I realise that it is a film about Lego puppets, but the Lego Movie was hilarious and judging from the trailer, I expect the Batman version to also be great to watch. All together: Everything is awesooooome! Everything is cool when you’re part of a team!

Other noteworthy releases in February: The Great Wall, The Space Between Us, Patient Zero

Films in March 2017

Beauty and the Beast

Tale as old as tiiiiime! I have to confess that I had goosebumps the first time I watched the trailer for the live action version of Beauty And The Beast. It stars Emma Watson, who is absolutely gorgeous and clever and the definition of girl power and the trailer made me want to punch Gaston in the face, so that’s a good thing. It looks like they did so well on this one and I can’t imagine it not living up to the expectations. I know, it is dangerous to say those things, but absolutely true. At least they nailed the ballroom scene. That’s already +100 points.

Other noteworthy releases in March: Logan, Power Rangers, Ghost in the Shell

Films in April 2017

The Circle

Once again a film that stars Emma Watson and also Tom Hanks, the plot can be summarised:

As she rises through the ranks of the world’s largest tech and social media company, The Circle, Mae (Emma Watson) is encouraged by company founder Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks) to live her life with complete transparency.

A very interesting and relevant concept, especially in the world we live in today where privacy is no longer guaranteed. The novel was a bestseller and I am curious to see what The Circle will be like.

Other noteworthy releases in April: Wonder, The Fate of the Furious, The Case for Christ

Films in May 2017

Pirates of the Caribbean; Dead Men Tell No Tales

Now this can go two ways; it will either be fantastic or absolutely terrible. We all loved the first Pirates, we thought the second was okay, the third meh and the fourth had us WTF in unison. While we all probably felt this film wasn’t necessary, I am curious to see what they will do with it. Johnny Depp is a great actor, especially as Jack Sparrow and as long as they combine action with humour, they should be on the right track. I really want this to be good. Please let this be good?

Other noteworthy releases: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, King Arthur, Alien: Covenant

Films in June 2017

Wonder Woman

While I am more a Marvel kind of girl than a DC lover (although I do love Harley Quinn very much), I think the June release definitely goes to Wonder Woman. I did not see Batman vs. Superman because I refuse to accept Ben Affleck as Batman and because apparently it was terrible, so I do not know this Wonder Woman yet. But a film which has a bad-ass female lead is one worth watching in my books so let’s hope Wonder Woman will be able to save the day or at least DC Comics.

Other noteworthy releases in June: The Mummy, The Book of Henry, Despicable Me 3

Films in July 2017

Spider-Man: Homecoming

I am going to be honest with you, I’ve only every watched one Spider-man film and after that I did not attempt to watch it again. Not because I don’t like Spider-man, I do. It’s just that I did not like the actor playing Spider-Man. That problem is solved now and as Spider-man was pretty great in the Avengers, I am excited to watch this one. Plus, Robert Downey Jr. is in it. What more do you need? Nothing, that’s what.

More noteworthy releases in July: The Dark Tower, War For the Planet of the Apes

The rest of the year

The other months do not have trailers available yet so we will look at those at a later time. I am especially excited about the Kingsman sequel and Thor and Star Wars. But we’ll see what they’ll be like. At least we’ll have plenty to look forward to in the next few month. Which films are you going to see?
