Good films that are underrated #1: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I came up with another fabulous idea for articles, even if I do say so myself. Do you know that feeling when you are in love with a certain book or film and nobody seems to know it? You try to convince your friends it is the best thing ever. Your mother gets endless text messages to go see it but she is not interested. Damnit, you just want people to see what you see. You want to enlighten their lives. Why can’t they just understand that? Worry no more. We are here to talk about those gems and make the world see what they are missing. In this first episode: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

What is it about?

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a 2005 film, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. The fact that it stars RDJ is reason enough to love this film already. Still not convinced? The film is a black comedy and brings together a private detective, a struggling actress and a thief masquerading as an actress. I don’t want to tell too much about the storyline, as that might give too much away. The film is incredibly witty and mocks the LA stereotypes of people desperate for fame and those desperate to cash in on it. All actors in the film are phenomenal and there are plenty of great scenes that will either have you laughing out loud, or thinking. Don’t worry, the laughing part is the most dominant. I have seen this film a million times and every single time I wonder why it didn’t become much bigger than it is.

How did it do?

The film’s budget was $15 million dollars and it made about $15,8 dollars worldwide. The film made about $4,2 million dollars in the US. That is not a huge profit, but the film had a very limited theatrical release. The reason why Robert Downey Jr. was brought in to play the lead, was because this was right after his time in prison. His career wasn’t exactly flourishing, and this was a way to get back on track. Mind you, this was all before Iron Man made him a big star again. Val Kilmer was interested in making a comedy and thus he got the part of Gay Perry.

While the film did receive a limited release, the film was distributed in more theatres across the US because of the favourable reviews. Right now it has a score of 85% favourable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s quite impressive. The film made most money overseas.

Why you should watch it

I cannot understand why this film wasn’t a bigger hit than it was. It is so much more clever than most films released these days. It has action and it has a plot to sometimes feels a little bit silly, but makes sense. Apart from that, the film makers used a lot of humour and actually managed to be funny. That is also something very rare these days. I think one of the reasons the film did not do too well was because RDJ wasn’t back to being the household name that he used to be. Val Kilmer wasn’t the most popular actor in Hollywood either. Perhaps the lack of star power (weird to say that now with RDJ being so huge) is what caused people to stay home initially. That is such a shame.

I do feel this film is incredibly underrated. It is an entertaining film that will keep you entertained for its entire running time. There isn’t a dull moment. The dialogue is fast-paced. The characters are great. Basically this is a flawless film that did not get the attention it deserved. Which is definitely why you have to go see it now and do yourself a favour. Trust me. You will thank me later.
