OK, so this is old news by now but still: Netflix and Marvel cancelled their first series. Out of all the four Defenders on Netflix, Danny Rand is the first to go. Is this surprising? No, not really. All the other heroes are more popular and attract more viewers. And most importantly: Iron Fist is just really, really bad. So after just two seasons, it’s the end for the immortal Iron Fist.
Marvel and Netflix issued a joint statement to Deadline earlier this week:
Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.
So immediately, speculations began because of the words ‘on Netflix’. Because this might just mean that Iron Fist will continue on the new streaming service Disney is currently making. But it has always been clear that the four Defenders series would stay on Netflix. So this speculating is just that. It’s the fans hoping for more. Because let’s just face it: even though the second season ended with a major cliffhanger, Iron Fist is done and over. Bye Danny Rand! See you never!
What about the other 3 Defenders?
Best news first: the third season of Daredevil will air on Netflix in just a couple of days on October 19th. Since this has always been the most stable factor of all Defender-characters, everybody’s hopes are pretty high for this third season. Wilson Fisk/Kingpin will play a much larger role again, so there’s looking forward to that. And Bullseye is making his appearance! All the trailers look very promising and the first reviews are pretty positive. Go Matt Murdoch, make us love the Marvel series again!
Because Jessica Jones‘ season 2 was pretty much a big let-down. It’s still a very cool series thanks to the awesome actors, but the plot was all over the place and it suddenly became a very predictable series. Still, the series has been renewed for a third season so let’s hope that will be better.
As for Luke Cage, I still have to see the second season. I just didn’t have the time for it (and wanted to see others series more). It did have good reviews so I’ll probably check it out in the near future. Luke Cage hasn’t officially been renewed for a third season, but the predictions are it will.
As for The Defenders themselves, that show was always meant to have just one season. So that’s over.
Not a Defender but we still have to name him: Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. His series was quite refreshing, featuring an anti-hero instead of an actual hero. We still have to wait until next year, but there will be a second season for Frank and his friends. And mostly enemies.
Will we see Danny Rand again?
Well, who knows? He did have pretty great chemistry with Luke Cage. And while I haven’t yet season Luke’s second season, I do know that Danny makes an appearance. So who knows, he might be back in the third season as well, maybe in a bit of a larger role. Or perhaps the hopefuls are right after all, and Iron Fist and his posse will transfer to the Disney streaming service. What are you hoping for?
