Legally Blonde 3 is happening

In 2001, Legally Blonde was released. The film was a massive success, grossing over $141,8 million worldwide. The film made a star of Reese Witherspoon and showed girls everywhere that they can become anything they want if they set their minds to it. The film spawned a sequel in 2003, Legally Blonde: Red, White & Blonde, a direct-to-DVD spinoff called Legally Blondes and a musical which premiered in 2007. Elle Woods, Witherspoon’s character, was one of the funniest characters to grace the screen in the early 2000s. Which is why it is excellent news that Witherspoon will return for Legally Blonde 3.

What was Legally Blonde about again?

Summary is taken from RottenTomatoes:

Elle Woods has it all. She’s the president of her sorority, a Hawaiian Tropic girl, Miss June in her campus calendar, and, above all, a natural blonde. She dates the cutest fraternity boy on campus and wants nothing more than to be Mrs. Warner Huntington III. But, there’s just one thing stopping Warner from popping the question: Elle is too blonde. Growing up across the street from Aaron Spelling might mean something in LA, but nothing to Warner’s East-Coast blue blood family. So, when Warner packs up for Harvard Law and reunites with an old sweetheart from prep school, Elle rallies all her resources and gets into Harvard, determined to win him back. But law school is a far cry from the comforts of her poolside and the mall. Elle must wage the battle of her life, for her guy, for herself and for all the blondes who suffer endless indignities everyday.

Release Date

Witherspoon will be a producer the film through her Hello Sunshine Production Company, along with the original producer, Marc Platt, of the first film. While there is no director attached to the project yet, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah will be writing the script.

Witherspoon confirmed her involvement with the project by posting an Instagram video in a pink bikini with the caption “It’s true #LegallyBlonde3”. The film is now set to be released on the 14th of February 2020. So we still have to wait a while but it is all very exciting.

What to expect?

Well, to be honest, nothing is known about the film yet. We assume that the story will show what Elle has been up to in the years after Legally Blonde 2. Considering the bad reviews on that one, they might want to forget that story even exists. We assume Elle will still work as a lawyer and will still try to make the world a better place. Of course, it would be great if they would use the current situation of our world in this film. But then again, most of it is pretty bleak and it will still be a comedy after all.

Girl Power

Reese Witherspoon has become a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. With her production company Hello Sunshine, she has produced many great films and she creates many opportunities for women in Hollywood. With her company, she has set up a program to help young girls get into filmmaking. About this, she says:

“Everyone at Hello Sunshine is ecstatic about this program where we can share our resources with young female storytellers and filmmakers,” says Witherspoon, “Hopefully, it will provide young women with the tools to tell their own stories , and ultimately, start a chain reaction that leads to continued access and opportunity for them in our industry.”

Besides helping girls to become filmmakers, Witherspoon also tries to create better roles for females in Hollywood. A couple of years ago she received a script which she says was probably the worst script she ever read. About this, she said:

“I called my agents and said, ‘This is such a terrible script.’ They said, ‘Well, seven women want it so… you’re the only one who’s not vying for the part.’ And I thought, ‘God, if this is what we’ve come to, I have to get busy.'”

Since then, she brought films like Gone Girl and Wild to the big screen. And let’s not forget the series Big Little Lies. This is very admirable and as she said to the Hollywood Reporter: “You can either complain about a problem or you can be part of the solution.”

Which is why we are excited to see the girl power Legally Blonde 3 will bring to the big screen. Are you excited?
