Yesterday a trailer was released for the upcoming Netflix Series Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. I have been pretty excited about this series, even though I have never read the books and never seen the film starring Jim Carrey. But this time it is different. Here’s a list of reasons on why to be excited for the Lemony Snickey series airing in January 2017 on Netflix.
Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf
This is a major reason to watch this show. For those of you who are not familiar with NPH, he is a phenomenal actor, most known for his role as the womanizer Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother. In that show he already showed that he has great comedic timing and can carry a series all by himself. The trailer is also evidence that he is perfect as Count Olaf and a master of disguises. He is one of the main reasons why I want to watch the series.
It combines dark humour with a macabre setting
The story is about the Baudelaire children, who’ve just lost their parents in a fire. They are placed in custody of their relative Count Olaf, who is only really interested in their parent’s fortune. He wants to get rid of the kids, but they are smart and despite a series of unfortunate events happening to them, they always outsmart Count Olaf. What I like about the series is that it uses quite a lot of humour but in the meantime is very dark. Most series these days are either dark and depressing and really serious, or very light-hearted and comedic. A Series of Unfortunate Events combines humour and that darkness, which is an excellent combination.
It looks stunning
The trailer looks stunning already, but have you discovered this secret website yet? It shows the Reptile Room which features in episode 3 and 4 and looks fantastic. Or this secret website which takes us to Count Olaf’s house, which looks incredibly creepy and haunting. Perfect for such a dark character.
The characters are interesting
Whether it’s the Baudelaire children, Count Olaf or the pale women, every character seems very interesting judging from the trailer. It is obvious that they’ve put extensive work into creating these characters and the way they are portrayed, from costume to make-up. I always appreciate it when film-makers pay attention to details and just having a great set is not enough. The characters make it come to life so they need to be brilliant as well.
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events will (un)fortunately be released on Friday the 13th of January on Netflix. Are you excited?
