Morbius is next in Sony’s Venomverse

Venom has only just been released (review will come soon) and hasn’t particularly received great reviews. Despite mixed reactions, Sony is already plotting their next move. The whole idea of Venom was to launch a universe based on the Spider-man villains. The film is expected to do well over the weekend. However, it is up against A Star Is Born. That film receives a lot of hype at the moment and could be a tough competitor. That said, Sony doesn’t seem to be too worried about it. Venom producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Ared already mentioned the next project in an interview with Comicbook.com: Morbius.

Jared Leto is at it again

Rumors circulated around the web before, but now it is confirmed. Jared Leto will play antihero Morbius. Production will start shortly. In the interview, Tolmach said:

“We’re obviously working on Morbius now. That’s sort of next up for us.”

About Leto, the producers had the following to say:

Tolmach said he expects “awesomeness” from the Academy Award-winning actor, who famously took a method approach when unleashing his take on the Joker in Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad. “Just a similar level of intensity and charisma and devotion to the character.”

“And loving the character,” added Arad, a longtime producer on Marvel-inspired projects, from Blade to the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. Tolmach confirmed, saying Leto “loves the character.”

In 2016, Leto already took a step into the superhero realm. He portrayed the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad and he will revise his role in upcoming films in the DC universe. Leto was notorious for his method acting and the crazy dedication to staying in character. Although the Joker didn’t have a lot of screen time in Suicide Squad, his role did get a lot of feedback. The responses to his character were mixed.

Who is Morbius?

Morbius is in fact a scientist: Dr. Michael Morbius. You might also know him as Morbius, the Living Vampire. The character initially made his appearance as an antagonist of Spider-man. Later he received his own series. Michael Morbius was an award-winning biochemist. Morbius got his vampiric superpowers and physical trait due to an experiment gone wrong; he set up a biochemical experiment to cure his rare blood disorder. While Morbius has acted as a villain, he at times allies with Spider-man. This does make him an interesting character. Earlier reports said the following about the plot:

“Horror action story of a scientist who, in trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, accidentally transformed himself into a living vampire who, though disgusted by his own bloodlust, chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life.”
