Disney has been very busy creating live-action remakes of Disney classics. We’ve had Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book so far. The Lion King is coming up and Aladdin and Mulan are in the works. One film I was not aware of was the remake of Dumbo. I was rather surprised when the trailer dropped a few days ago. Directed by Tim Burton, Dumbo promises to be another one of those films that tug at your heartstrings.
Dumbo is a film I’ve probably only seen once in my life. I was already traumatised by Bambi and his dead mother. There was no need to add another sad story to the mix. I remember that Dumbo made me sad, despite the happy ending. Needless to say that it didn’t really strike me as the best film to turn into a live-action remake.
When I clicked on the trailer for the first time, I didn’t think I would be impressed. I mean, how are you going to make a flying elephant look believable? Yet I couldn’t help but being captivated by the trailer. It’s short and magical. Dumbo looks insanely cute as well. It’s been a while since Tim Burton has made a truly good film. However, I think that Dumbo can be a new Tim Burton classic we’ve been waiting for. He has always had a way with a story about outcasts.
Principal photography for the film started in July 2017 and wrapped up in November of the same year. The film stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Eva Green. The film is expected to be released on the 29th of March 2019. It’s still quite a while to wait, but hopefully it will be worth it.
