Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (spoiler free)

I might be a bit biased, but so far, this has been the best film to be released this year. But I am already getting ahead of myself. Oh my God. That was one hell of a ride. Okay, focus Ingrid. You have a proper review to write. So, basically I went to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them because I was dying to go back to the Wizarding World. I was not disappointed. It was an adventure, and there were times when I laughed and cried and just held my breath because of the suspense. Basically, Fantastic Beasts made me forget the whole Cursed Child drama. And that says a lot.

So what makes Fantastic Beasts so great? This review will be spoiler-free so don’t worry.

The Storytelling

Fantastic Beasts differ from the Potter films in the sense that it starts off much darker than the Potters. Of course, near the end of the HP series, we also saw a much darker world, but Fantastic Beasts immediately warns us about the coming of Grindelwald and the effect this has on the Wizarding community in Europe. The events happening in Fantastic Beasts are also related to what is happening in Europe, which will make it easier to continue the story in the upcoming films.

J.K Rowling is a master in using themes that are important in our own world and using them in this fantasy world she has created, resulting in awareness for these issues. But it’s not all darkness. There is a lot of humour as well and romance. A perfect combination of all these factors.

The cast and characters

The cast could not have been assembled more perfectly. Eddie Redmayne is fantastic as Newt, the socially awkward guy who prefers beasts over humans. Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski has excellent comedic timing and the girls complete the cast of main characters.

For those of you who have been wondering about Johnny Depp, after seeing the film, I’m definitely sure he will do the character of Grindelwald justice. No matter what he may be accused of in his personal life, doesn’t take away the fact that he is a phenomenal actor and I am very much looking forward to the next film.

The beasts

Oh my god, the beasts! They looked so incredibly realistic and adorable and cute and I want them to turn them into plushies and give all the plushies to me. Seriously, they don’t look like they were fantastic2created by a computer at all. They look like real creatures that could just as well live on this planet. I know they’ve said that in the next installments the beasts will not have such a big role any more. This is a shame because they do add a lot to the story, especially for some comic relief.

The verdict

Fantastic Beasts truly is a fantastic film that will at times take your breath away. I was happy to be transported back into the Wizarding World and to feel the excitement and the magic once again. I am definitely going to see it many times to truly let it sink in. So go see it if you have the chance!
