Free Kesha

I have been an awful blogger. I know, but it was really busy. Is that a good excuse? No? Whatever. It will have to make do.

So, I know it is not Music Monday but today I read an article about Kesha’s ongoing battle with Dr. Luke. Basically her motion was denied because the court ruled that they did give her the opportunity to record music. Of course she had to record with the man who abused her, but hey, you can’t have everything in life, right?

Wrong. This is an important case in the music industry because the outcome means so much for female artists who might be taken advantage of. They may be promised the world but effectively sell their soul to the devil without being fully aware of it. And that is not something new. But it is something that should change. Yes, the music industry often contracts that give artists little control over their own music and image. But as a woman, in an industry dominated by men, it can be an even tougher call.

And some people claim that Kesha’s accusations are false. That she is just trying to get out of the contract. But if all is dandy, why would she have to put herself through all the effort and pain to cut the strings that are choking her. It is a problem that women who have the courage to step forward with their story are being shut down in favour of the men in power. Women are not objects. We are not slaves. Kesha has a right to decide abou her own career. And yes of course you can’t simply breach a contract if you want to. But we are not just talking about someone who is unhappy with a contract. We are talking about someone who claims to be raped and abused. We are talking about someone who had treatment because of the mental scars this has caused her. And people still say: “Well, unless she comes with clear evidence, I will not believe her. She is just saying this to benefit from the situation.”

Hold on….remember Chris Brown? Remember how there was evidence that he abused Rihanna? Not even a little, but like punched her until her face was barely recognisable. Yet still people did not condemn Chris. He actually had another hit quite recently. Why do people automatically assume Kesha is lying while Chris Brown is let off? Is it because he has a penis?

Kesha posted this on instagram:

I have nothing left to hide. I did this because the truth was eating away my soul and killing me from the inside. this is not just for me. this is for every woman, every human who has ever been abused. sexually. emotionally. mentally. I had to tell the truth. so the outcome will be what it will be. there’s nothing left I can do. it’s just so scary to have zero control in your fate. but this is my path this life for whatever reason…

Kesha doesn’t ask for millions. She doesn’t ask for Dr. Luke to be prosecuted and put in jail. She is only asking for her life back. She is only asking for her creative freedom.

And that’s why I think we should all support Kesha.
