She’s known as the Mother of Dragons and a string of other fancy names which we cannot remember even if we tried. She has grown from a little girl who did whatever the men in her life wanted her to do, to a woman who takes no shit. I am of course talking about Daenerys Targaryen, Dany for short. She’s one of the many strong female characters who feature in Game of Thrones. Today we’re going to take a look at what makes her such a badass and what we can learn from someone like her. Are you ready?
Daenerys Targaryen: fighting the system
We got to know Daenerys as a rather timid girl who did whatever her brother the Asshole wanted. She was a gift to Khal Drogo, like she was a freaking Amazon gift card. Dany had to endure terrible things, before she did fall in love with her husband. Not the best way to start a relationship, but hey, in the game of thrones, you either win or you die. Or get brutally raped. There is no way in between apparently.
Anyways, after Khal Drogo died and Dany became the proud mother of three bad-ass dragons, we saw her flourish into a bad-ass woman. No longer is she just the wife or just the sister, but she’s the one calling the shots. And while at times ruling is not as easy as it may have looked at first, she still manages to mostly be a fair to her people, although some might disagree. So far, power has not corrupted her in the way it has corrupted Cersei, but who knows what will happen. She is coming for that Iron Throne and she means business.
We’re not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break it.
What can we learn from this?
Daenerys lived in a world where women were not seen as equals to men. Pretty much what’s still happening, although not as extreme. But Dany shows that you can change. She shows that being a woman doesn’t mean you are weaker or that you have to abide to a man’s wishes at all costs. She shows that you can be a strong leader, without all the testosterone getting in the way of functioning. I think the start of her change is clearly shown in this scene where she finally speaks up to her asshole brother Viserys and later calmy watched him burn.
Strong women can be vulnerable
Dany has a hard time in the beginning as she figures out how to be a queen. She lost Khal Drogo, she lost her baby and she was not taken seriously by any of the men in power. While a king would probably not be as affected when a burnt child would be laid at his feet, Dany was so affected that she even went as far as locking up her dragons so they could not hurt anyone anymore. Of course that resulted in her enemies feeling like they could attack her now, but luckily Drogon had escaped and helped her. Point is, as a queen you have to make tough choices and while power can corrupt, Dany shows that you can still stay human.
But she doesn’t let her vulnerability take over. She knows the political games that everybody plays. She knows men’s weaknesses and she knows how to use her femininity to get what she wants. There is no shame in that and I applaud George R.R. Martin for writing her amazing character (and many other great female characters).
What can we learn from it?
Power is not only for men. You do not have to be a ‘bitch’ all the time in order to make others listen to you. Yes, you have to be tough at times and do things you rather not do. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t still feel sadness or show that you care. That’s the strength of women. We can be both compassionate and strong. Daenerys Targaryen is a good example of that.
Daenerys may have been betrayed by many, but she is an insanely loyal and clever person. She stuck with Drogo despite their rocky start and tried to save him as best she could. Despite ser Jorah being constantly friendzoned and told to get the fuck out of her kingdom, she forgave him after he saved her. She also made sure he would go and find a cure for his greyscale. Also Missandei, her closest friend, has been protected from harm on Dany’s orders. Also, let’s not forget she let Tyrion stay on as hand of the Queen, despite the fact that he fucked up just a little. She only left Daario behind as she sailed for Westeros, but as they say, Thrones before bros.
In short, Daenerys Targaryen is a beautiful woman both inside and out. The circumstances in which she grew up have changed her and she wishes to change the world for the better. And that’s why we love Daenerys so much.
Also, let’s never forget this glorious moment. To hell with the patriachy!
