Why Double Standards are a bitch

A few days ago, pictures appeared online of Kim Kardashian, doing what Kim Kardashian does best; pose almost naked. Considering the fact we live in a society in which nudity is quite normal, you wouldn’t say people would be shocked by this. I mean, boobs are just boobs. Nothing shocking about that. We’re not living in the 40s anymore.

Yet, as I was scrolling through the comments on this picture, I noticed something peculiar. It were mostly women who commented: “Does she have no self-respect? She has a daughter ffs! Cover yourself up!” I found this quite shocking. Regardless of the fact that if I had Kimmy K’s curves, I would run around naked all day long, I do not see how posing in your underwear is a bad influence on your daughter. On the contrary, to me it seems like it is a way of empowerment. She is proud enough of her body to show it to the world, regardless of what people might say about her. And also, the kid is like, what, 2 years old? It’s not as if she is aware of the controversy.

Kim Kardashian vs. Justin Bieber

Whether you like Kim Kardashian posing in her underwear is one thing. However, the obvious double standards that are maintained nowadays became very clear when Justin Bieber posted a photo of his naked butt on Instagram. This photo was not removed, while pictures of semi-naked women (or boobs) are removed by instagram. How strange?

Take a look at the comments below. First about Demi Lovato’s skimpy outfit, the second about the Biebs:

The Biebs is praised, even told he should turn around and show it all. Demi basically is a whore for daring to pose into a bra that is no more revealing than a bikini. The message this sends to younger girls? Guys can do whatever they want, can dress how they want or undress when they want and it’s all fine. If you do it, you are a slut and you should be ashamed of yourself and your body.

Proud of your body

On one hand I am told that I should be proud of my body. Curves or not, celebrate those lady lumps! Feel free! Be free! Yay for the body revolution! On the other hand, once I do show that I am confident about my body and show that body off to the rest of the world, I should be ashamed of myself. What was I thinking? What will my non-existent daughters say? A real shame because this society is working towards encouraging girls to accept themselves, yet knocks those girls back into insecurity the first chance it gets.
So I’d say, let Kim Kardashian hang her boobs out! Let Justin Bieber helicopter his penis for likes! Let’s run around naked without being ashamed of our curves! And most of all, let’s not judge each other for flaunting that birthday suit. Only then are we back on the road to equality!
