Let’s talk about Kim Kardashian’s nude pic

I know the whole Kim Kardashian nude pic gate has been going on for a few days now. But you know me, I am always late to the party. But do not worry, I did not want you to have to go another day without my view on this sensitive topic. I mean, refugee crisis? Who cares! Trump taking over America? So what? Everything’s going to pot? PLEASE KIMMIE K WAS NEKKID, THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT!

When I heard the ‘news’ that Kim Kardashian had posted another nude selfie, I shrugged and went on with my life. I have seen her naked more often than I see myself naked. Not literally because that would be weird. It is just to emphasise the fact that Kim Kardashian posing nude is no big deal. At all.

And yet a whole discussion followed. People made fun of Kim. Fellow celebrities tweeted that she is giving the wrong example to young girls. We are more than our bodies, you know! And I agree with that up until a certain point. You see, we as women have long been seen as objects. Our job was to keep the house clean, make sure the hubby was happy and pop out babies like we are poppin’ pills. Nobody cared if you were smart as a girl because you did not matter. In that sense, yes, showing your body just for attention is not in line with the whole ‘men should consider us equals because we have something to say and we matter. We are more than our bodies’ movement.

On the other hand, for a long time women did not own their own bodies. Our bodies existed solely for the enjoyment of men. When you were proud of your body or showed as much as your ankle, you were slut-shamed. In the past few years we have come so far when it comes to being proud of our bodies.

Slut shaming is a massive issue

Slut shaming is still a massive issue, but we as women contribute to that if we yell at Kim that she needs to put some clothes on. Because let’s be honest, there was hardly any sexual about the picture she posted. It was just her naked body. A body she is proud of and rightly so. Why is it such a massive deal? Why does she get all the crap while a men can post a nudie and get praise for it (ahum Justin Bieber). It’s not like you actually SAW anything. It was censored. Why so prude?

I think we as women need to celebrate our sexuality and I think that we should praise women who dare to do so instead of crucifying them. Regardless of what you think of Kim Kardashian, if she wishes to post a picture of herself in her birthday suit, who are you to judge? Am I saying that all teenage girls need to follow her example now? Absolutely not. Posting such a thing needs to be a well-thought out decision. Teens do not realise the impact Social Media can have. Kim Kardashian does and she uses it to her advantage. And I think it is a wonderful thing that she as a woman with curves is brave enough to share her body with the world.

Honestly, let’s worry about other things. Like the refugee crisis. Like the impending doom is Donald Trump gets into the White House. Important matters. You do you and let Kim Kardashian do whatever she pleases.
