Pop Culture girls who rock our world: Hermione Granger

It seems like we’re stuck in the Harry Potter world. I asked on Twitter who you would like to see in the next post which features the most bad-ass chicks who have ever been created in pop culture, and most people voted for Hermione Granger, brightest witch of her age and the one who made sure Harry survived until the very end. Last week you could read all about Harley Quinn and why she’s so fantastic, and today we will follow up with Hermione, who made millions of girls feel that their brains mattered and not only the way they looked. Plus she’s the ultimate sass queen. So why do we love Hermione so much? Keep on reading!

She’s the brightest witch of her age

Yes, she may have annoyed her classmates and is the know-it-all we collectively sigh about. But Hermione is a girl with a passion and the brains to back it all up. Before she even boarded the Hogwarts express, she had already read all first-year textbooks, despite only just finding out she was a witch. She is not embarrassed of answering questions and certainly doesn’t mind being the teacher’s pet. Her worst fear is not getting good grades. In a world where girls are judged on the way they look rather than what they have to say or offer, Hermione is a breath of fresh air. She shows girls that you can be ambitious and that there is no need in dumbing yourself down to appeal to men. Because let’s be honest, if Harry didn’t have Hermione, he’d pretty much died in the first book.

She is loyal

Remember when Ron and Harry were fighting in Goblet of Fire? Hermione stayed friends with both of them. Remember when Ron left Harry in Deathly Hallows? Hermione was the one to stay even though it hurt her to see Ron go. Remember she loved her parents so much that she obliviated them to make sure that they were safe while the war was raging? Remember when little Hermione took the blame for the troll fiasco, protecting Harry and Ron who had been assholes to her? There is not a single time when Hermione wasn’t the best friend anyone could have.

She is a total badass

So what if you call her a mudblood? She will proudly say that yes she was born from Muggle parents and still whoop your pure blood ass. So you want to be a dick to her? Fine, taste her fist in your face. Hermione is not one to back down. She’s very brave, courageous and more importantly she doesn’t take shit from anyone. She knows her worth and won’t let anyone tell her otherwise. A true badass.

She is not afraid to show her emotions

Big girls don’t cry, they say, but Hermione is not afraid to show her emotions. She cried when she saw Ron and Lavender smooching and also when Ron left them in Deathly Hallows, she put on a brave face but cried too. But it’s not just about crying. Hermione is not afraid to be angry either or shy and in love (but then again, have you seen what Viktor Krum looks like these days?). Yes, she is a flawed character but that is what makes her real. It is why we all love her so much. Because despite her being a bad-ass witch, we can relate to her, which is the most important thing of all.

‘Books! And cleverness! There are more important things — friendship and bravery”

She fought for what she believed in

Whether it was aiding Harry in his fight against Lord Voldemort, or finding S.P.E.W to save the house elves, Hermione was always straightforward about her principles regardless of what others thought. She stayed up all night to knit hats for the house elves. Isn’t that dedication? She also told Scrimgeour that no, she doesn’t want to get involved into magical law. She wants to some good in the world. That’s our girl!

Hermione shows us that you have to stand for what you believe in and take action when you feel it is necessary. Use your voice. Speak up. You deserve to be heard.

“Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself.”

Whether you imagined her white, black, asian or as a Marsian, I think we should be happy to have such an amazing female character who serves as an example to (young) girls everywhere. Now excuse me while I go read Hogwarts A History.
