I like to learn a lot. Sometimes I have phases in which I am determined to learn a new skill. At the moment I still want to become a good digital artist (even though I barely have time to draw. But shhh). Back in the old day, you had to follow a course or buy a book to learn a certain skill. Or just go by trial and error. But we live in modern times now and we have youtube to teach us everything from how to bake an egg to how to make a custom Darth Vader custome with toilet paper.
I enjoy watching these tutorials because I always learn something I did not know before. A certain technique or skill. However, there is one thing that does bother me about tutorials, whether it be make-up tutorials or drawing tutorials. They are so damn hard.
I have yet to find a Youtuber who can explain to me in simple steps how I can get a certain look or create a certain thing.
“I’m just going to take this colour and put it all over my crease like this,” they say in a 3-minute video. It takes me 20 minutes to do the same step and then I still look like a clown when I’m supposed to look like a ‘sexy vamp for Christmas.’
75 complicated steps
“Hello guys, today I am going to show you how to do this easy look within just 75 extremely complicated steps that will make you cry in frustration.” That would be a more accurate opening of most tutorials.
And it is not just online that we find these seemingly easy tutorials which are actually more complicated than solving a rubik’s cube while skydiving. We find them in real life as well.
I was at a particularly fancy warehouse because sometimes I like to torture myself looking at stuff I will never be able to buy. A lady spoke to me and asked me if I would like her to curl my hair. Of course I said yes. My normally dull hair look could do with some curling.
Super easy YouTube tutorials
As she went along, she explained how easy it was. Look and here is a curl! Even you can do it! she screamed in my ear with feigned enthousiasm. I had the most beautiful curls ever and even I believed that I could do this with ease. So I bought one of their overpriced curling irons and I went home and tried to create the same Hollywood-worthy look, only to make my hair extremely unhappy. But no curl in sight. No matter how much I practised, it did not work out. I watched hundreds of super easy youtube tutorials but there was nobody who could teach me how to get this fabulous look. I ended up selling the damned thing. All it had brought me were tears and frustration.
And maybe it is just my lack of skills. Maybe I am cut out to be a hairstylist or a make-up guru. Maybe my inability to draw a life-like character is just because I can’t really draw that well. I know. Practise makes perfect. But it would be nice if there’d be more tutorials with step by step explanation and preferably Teletubbie language, so even I can learn new stuff and be part of the cool kids.
Do you understand my frustrations? Or do you know somebody who does have good tutorials (beauty and digital art-wise)? Let me know in the comments!
