I remember the days when YouTube was just becoming popular. It was the place where people could post their webcam-filmed videos and attract an audience if they were lucky. It evolved and Youtubers rose to fame with videos in which they showed tutorials or just chatted to the camera or played games. These were the new celebrities. Millions of teenage girls fell in love with Youtubers, just like people from my generation still fell in love with popstars.
I have always been amazed by this fact, but I thought it was really cool. However, now a new trend has arrived that I do not quite understand but which seems to take over YouTube. I am talking about vlogs.
Suddenly everybody and their mother started filming their day. From the moment they get up until the moment they go to sleep, they will have a camera in their hand. And as I am someone who is interested in these trends and want to understand them, I have also watched many vlogs. I know that what I’m looking at makes no sense. Most of these vloggers aren’t even doing anything remotely interesting, yet I still keep watching. It fascinates me and it scares me at the same time that I can be so sucked into such mindless business. And it shocks me even more that there are so many people who have made a job out of vlogging. They literally just film what they are doing, even when they are not really doing anything, and they make thousands of dollars. I on the other hand have to get up early every morning and drag my ass to work in other to rake in some cash. I think I have been doing something wrong.
And I do have respect for vloggers. I sometimes try to film events I go to, but I always forget to film at some point and just give up in the end. I could never in a million years film my entire life, every up and down, so that people can take a look into my life. And I do not believe for a second that these vloggers portray themselves the way they truly are. They are always trying to be the best version of themselves, which means they will always have to be conscious of how they act. And I wonder, if you literally film everything you do, do you still enjoy it? If you go to a theme park but are too busy vlogging and thinking about what would look good on camera, do you still have a good time? I like to not worry about these things when I’m going out and about, but some vloggers post vlogs every day. And their fans do get angry when a vlog is not uploaded in time.
An example of a vlog
But while I have respect for these vloggers, I do think it sets unrealistic career dreams for young people. Everybody wants to be a famous Youtuber now, but only few make money off of it. And yes, the same can be said about singers and actor, but that is different. When you become a singer or an actor, you are working on a craft. You create something that will last for many years and will be appreciated for many years. But it takes no talent to just film your daily activities. And you will not be youtube famous forever. Teens will grow up and move on and the Youtubers who do not distinguish themselves with actual talent will be forgotten as they get older and do not appeal to young viewers anymore. What do you do when you have placed all your bets on Youtube? It won’t be satisfying in the end.
I notice the few times I do make videos, that I act different in front of the camera. Everybody has that camera voice, I guess. But I was at an event a few weeks back and these girls, barely 15-years old were busy vlogging. In annoyed voices they would bitch about where to get the perfect shot, but the moment the camera was on, they were all cheerful again and were having the time of their lives. While I understand that you can’t be all depressing in your vlogs, I just don’t understand why someone would want to post everything about their lives on the internet. Unless it means they can buy a big ass house of course.
You won’t every see me do a daily vlog, because I am too lazy for that and not comfortable enough to do so. But that doesn’t take away the fact that vlogs and Vloggers keep being a form of amusement and annoyance for me.
Do you like vlogs? Do you vlog? Let me know in the comments!
